I have two main influences that inspire me to be a Game Developer from my favourite game ‘Lufia: The Rise of the Sinistrals,’ who are Masahide Miyata, the Scenario Writer and Yasunori Shiono, who was the Composer. What drives me as an aspiring Game Developer is wanting to create games that will be memorable and emotionally engaging for the player.
Miyata was the lead Scenario Designer and Writer in the Lufia series. What inspires me about him is his ability to develop complex and meaningful scenarios that allow the player to develop meaningful and deep connections with characters in the games as well as the events and stories that has been presented. In the instance of Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals (1995), which was a Super Nintendo (SNES) title, this was the first title that managed to successfully make me as a player form close emotional connections with the characters and bring tears to my eyes by the game’s grim end. Most works that Miyata has been involved in have similar effects. He has great ability at capturing the player and engaging them in a solid emotional connection and a powerful story, which falls in line with the type of stories I wish to create.
Similarly, Yasunori Shiono whom also composed the audio on all entries in the Lufia franchise is capable of capturing emotion through sound. Considering the fact that Shiono had to compose powerful songs within the capabilities of the technology of the time. What inspires me about this is how through creativity, Shiono was able to achieve great sounds, and sounds that promote emotional responses. His styles in games is typically harmonic, orchestral and have a sense of grandeur and deeper meaning.
For me, the above two artists both have tremendous skill in creating memorable pieces of work, and whilst the Lufia series may not be by any means a particularly well known series, it has garnered a cult following in both its content and audio, which only inspires me more. Even if a title I may produce may not be a hit seller, if it became memorable or gained a cult following, that would make it worthwhile. For these reasons I have a large interest in Level Design, Character Design and Story. I want to be able to tell my tale, and have an emotional impact on others.
